This Blueberry Walnut Toast combines thick sliced sourdough toast topped in rich cream cheese, crunchy, toasted walnuts and fresh, tart blueberries drizzled with sweet honey and a sprinkled with dash of spicy cinnamon.

Toast is the ultimate easy comfort food

Whether it's as simple as toasted white bread with salted butter or a bit more elevated like this Blueberry Walnut Toast, something special happens when bread gets hit with a little heat. Basic bread transforms into a whole other level of comfort when toasted and topped. I'm not sure what type of sorcery happens inside of toasters, but who am I to question the magic of those heat induced moments.

If bread is life, toast is living! Bread is a staple around the world. It's a comfort that comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes. But when you slice it, toast it and top it, bread is really living its best life. There are endless ways to enjoy toast but one I always come back to is this Blueberry Walnut Toast. I think it's the simplicity and balance of this fruit topped toast that makes it so special.

For an even more elevated take on this Blueberry Walnut Toast, check out my Blueberry Brie Walnut Toast on the California Grown website. This version features thick slabs of toasted sourdough topped with brie and baked until the cheese is warm and gooey. A mini mountain of blueberries and toasted walnuts crown the bubbly brie. Then, it’s all drizzled with a kiss of sweet honey and herby thyme tendrils for a fancy finish. Toast never looked so elegant.

Make this Blueberry Walnut Toast with just 6 simple ingredients

    • Pain au levain or simply levain is French for sourdough bread, a naturally leavened bread made from flour, water, salt. You can opt to use any bread you prefer but the mildly tangy flavor, tender interior and crusty exterior make for an ideal base when toasted just right.
    • Cream cheese tops the toasted sourdough in a rich, smooth, tangy and ultra creamy spread. The cream cheese also helps the other ingredients cling to the toast so it's even more pleasurable to eat.
    • Blueberries add a pop of sweet and tart freshness to the toast. Since they are full of vitamins and antioxidants, blueberries make for a deliciously healthy topping. Feel free to change up the berries and use what you have or even top this toast with mixed berries. You can't go wrong.
    • Walnuts are another healthy toast topping. These nutrient-dense nuts are full of protein and fiber, adding healthy flavor and texture to the toast.
    • Honey is drizzled over the top of the Blueberry Walnut Toast to add just a kiss of natural sweetness.
    • Cinnamon finishes the toast in warmth and comfort.

Swap the toppings and take this Blueberry Walnut Toast in different directions

As I said above, there are countless types of bread available. And while this Blueberry Walnut Toast works with basic white bread or something wheaty and seedy, sourdough takes the cake on this toast. The shatteringly crusty exterior against the tender crumb of the interior provides just the right amount of stability when toasted. But you can always choose your own adventure when enjoying toast. I even make this recipe using bagels as the base and it's just as delicious.

Blueberry Walnut Toast with cream cheese, honey and cinnamon is a delicious breakfast that tastes best in bed. 😉

This toast recipe calls for blueberries but any berries would be great! Strawberries, blackberries, raspberries or any mix of the above will work. You can even use cherries, peaches or apples. Top this toast with any fruit that tops your toast.

Walnuts and blueberries are good buds. But almonds, pecans or even hazelnuts are an easy swap here. Again, use what you've got and don't be afraid to mix it up! You may end up with something that looks quite different from this Blueberry Walnut Toast but I hope this recipe serves as a solid jumping off point for your toast journey.

    Mixed Berry Cream Cheese Toast
Here I switched things up and made a Mixed Berry Cream Cheese Toast with Date Syrup in place of honey and no nuts since I was fresh out. This Blueberry Walnut Toast can go all kinds of directions.

    Description

This Blueberry Walnut Toast combines thick sliced sour dough toasted toast topped in rich cream cheese, toasty, crunchy walnuts and tart blueberries, then drizzled with sweet honey and a dash of spicy cinnamon.

    Ingredients

    Units

2 thick slices pain au levain (sourdough) bread

    4 tablespoons cream cheese

    ½ cup walnut pieces

    ½ cup fresh blueberries

    2 teaspoons honey

    ¼ - ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

    Instructions

    1. Begin by toasting walnuts in a dry, hot, cast-iron skillet or pan over medium heat for 4-5 minutes, until they begin to brown slightly and give off a nutty aroma, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
    2. Slice two big, thick slabs from a high quality loaf of rustic levain bread and toast bread until golden brown or desired toastiness level.
    3. Slather each toasted slab with about 2 tablespoons of cream cheese, dot with blueberries and top with walnut pieces. Then drizzle on honey and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Sounds good, since I love blueberries, but am primarily interested in the pierced dishes - can you tell me what they are? Would sure love to get a set of them! Thanks!

Hi Susan, I just turned the plates over and it looks like I got them at Pier 1 Imports. I've had them for a while so I'm not sure if they still carry them. Good luck, I hope you can find them!
